Editorial We Are Approaching A Turning Point
The 2nd decade of the 21st century began with the world capitalist system mired in severe economic and financial crisis and the official circles that had championed the capitalist globalization in the post cold war era discredited in the eyes of the people as incapable to provide for people’s security and well-being.
The speed with which events in Tunisia and Egypt have unfolded in the first weeks of 2011, leading to the ouster of long-time ruling cliques in both countries, is beginning to capture the imagination of the masses in neighboring Arab and African countries and around the world. There is optimism amongst the people that the period of authoritarian rulers, draconian laws, cutbacks to social benefits and unbridled profiteering by domestic and international monopoly houses on the backs of the masses can soon be transcended through peoples’ political initiatives.
A generation of young people has grown up in the period of world retrogression that started with Reaganite-Thatcherite onslaught on the social property and social rights of people. This youthful force has been free from the baggage of the cold war rhetoric of "communist threat" to "western democracy" and has never accepted the contemporary doctrine of threat to "western civilization" by terrorism. Faced with the wholesale looting of the national products by a minority of wealthy business houses while abject misery remains for the toilers in each country in the era of capitalist globalization; the youthful force in each country are on course to seize their future in each country and nation. What has happened in Tunisia and Egypt and what is brewing in Jordan, Yemen and Algeria are an a new initiatives to exercise sovereignty by the peoples and to deliver security and wellbeing to citizens.
Both in Tunisia and Egypt, the response of the status quo has been to advocate multiparty democracy and “free and fair” elections to lull people to sleep after their historic success. But the conditions of the working people in all the countries of the world that pride themselves as bastions of multiparty electoral system drives home the truth that this electoral process cannot meet the aspiration of the peoples at this time and age if the constitution places the right of property over the rights of the people. The global economic and financial crisis of the last three years and the response of multiparty democracies have laid bare the truth that such democracies work to defend the rights of capital and not the rights of the peoples. It works for oligarchs, monopoly houses and financiers and leaves people out from decision-making process to ensure their wellbeing. A new system of democracy with a new electoral process that denies the political parties to govern is the necessity of our times. The success of the current movement of the people to empower themselves by affirming their individual rights as well as the right to choose their own system of government and economy will determine if the twenty first century will be a century of peace and progress or a century of war and unprecedented misery.
The time to step up the organizing work is here - the peoples can win historic victories in the coming struggles.
